You would think that you can cook brown rice just like how you cook white rice in a rice cooker: add water, hit the button. Nope. It always comes out too dry. Then you compensate by adding more water, and then it’s too mushy. WTF yo?
The key is to soak it in warm water 45 minutes before you cook it. Then it comes out moist and delicious. Also note that brown rice requires slightly more water than the usual white rice : water ratio. For one cup of brown rice, it varies anywhere between 2 1/2 – 3 cups of water depending on your preference. The Texmati brown rice I buy from Costco suggests 2 1/4, but I ignore it.
P.S. if you’re a garlic-phile like me, add a spoonful of minced garlic into your rice before putting it in the rice cooker for yummy garlicy rice.
